Matt Scorringe is a New Zealand Olympic Surfing Team Head Coach.

For over 10 years he was a professionally sponsored surfer competing on both the World U20 Pro Junior Series and World Qualifying Series.

With the knowledge and skills, Matt had gained through experiences as both a professional competitive surfer and caddy for one of the world’s best surfers he developed The Art Of Surfing — High-Performance Surf Coaching as a way of helping the next generation achieve their dreams.

Whales & Waves, in West Sumbawa is a beach resort, unlike anything else. Escape amongst untouched natural landscape boasting long, pristine white sandy bays, lush green forests and stunning views of uninhabited islands and breathtaking sunsets, with Lombok’s Mount Rinjani as a background.

Whales & Waves is the only place to stay in this area so there is nobody else around to surf the variety of secret, empty world-class waves that work all year round.

We provide an ideal space for multi-sport activities, adventure, relaxation and creativity. We welcome those wishing to use our facilities for purposes such as surf camps, yoga retreats, seminars and other conventions.

How to get there

Whales & Waves is located in Kertasari area, on the west coast of Sumbawa. It is 2 hours drive from Airport Sumbawa Besar and 30 minutes drive from Pototano Ferry Terminal. The nearest city is Taliwang which is 20 minutes drive and has ATMs, shops and hospital.

Flight Bali-Sumbawa
Fly from Bali Denpasar (DPS) to Sumbawa Besar (SWQ), don’t go to Bima airport!
‌Currently the fastest option: ‘Lion air' or ‘Wings Air' at 7:30 am from Bali to Sumbawa Besar, arrival time 9:10 am. There are sometimes later flights available but these tend to get booked up
Shuttle to Whales&Waves
We will provide an Airport shuttle, which will take approximately 2 hours.

Ferry to Sumbawa
Ride the public ferry to West Sumbawa Pototano Port (every hour)
Shuttle to Whales&Waves
We provide the transfer to "Whales and Waves" taking 30 minutes
It is possible‌ to rent your own car or motorbike and drive from Bali to "Whales and Waves". Allow 11−13 hours in total for this journey. You can sleep on some of the ferries.
Drive to Padang Bai
Drive to the port town of Padang Bai on the east coast of Bali
Ferry to Lembar
Take the public ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar (5 hours crossing; Rp 1.100.000 ticket for car with passengers)
Drive to Kayangan
Drive across Lombok (2 hours) to the port town of Kayangan
Ferry to Pototano Sumbawa
Take the public ferry from Kayangan to Pototano Sumbawa (1.5 hour crossing time, Rp 500.000 cost for 1 car with passengers).
Drive to Whales&Waves
Drive from Pototano to "Whales and Waves" resort and look for the green road sign signaling towards Kertasari village. Follow the new coastal road to Whales and Waves which you can also find on Google Maps.
